SIBO can contribute to histamine intolerance, the inability to tolerate foods that contain histamine or produce histamine. The small intestine lacks the protective mucus layer on the intestinal wall that the large intestine has. This makes the small intestine more sensitive &#8211; especially when there is an overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine (SIBO). This means that bacteria and toxins can more easily come into direct contact with the intestinal wall and activate immune receptors on the intestinal cells. This can trigger inflammation, causing the gut wall to suddenly let substances through that it would normally keep out.
