This means that sex hormones and gonads play a major role in regulating women’s immune systems – and vice versa.

The cell-mediated immune system (which controls the cell-killing activity of T cells against viruses, among other things) is stimulated by oestrogen, but the humoral immune system (which controls the production of antibodies by B cells) is also stronger in women than in men.

The strength of a woman’s immune system varies depending on her age, where she is in her menstrual cycle and whether she is pregnant.

Why stronger immune systems?

The reason for women’s stronger immune systems is precisely the ability to reproduce, as a woman must be healthy in order to become pregnant. In addition, a woman must be able to cope with the stresses of a long pregnancy and, after giving birth, the stress of feeding, caring for and protecting the baby.

Women’s high estrogen levels keep the immune system in good shape, while men’s androgens* (testosterone being the most important) tend to suppress their immune system, which hardly changes after puberty.

A woman’s immune system becomes stronger at puberty, the cellular immune system is then suppressed during pregnancy, while after the birth of the baby it returns to its previous high level. At the onset of menopause, the immune system is lowered again, unless a series of immune-boosting measures are taken to continue to keep the woman’s immune system in good shape.

Changes during the fertility cycle

The immune system also oscillates within a menstrual cycle, or the fertility cycle as I call it for a more positive word:

Before ovulation, sex hormones stimulate the immune system but

During the second half of the menstrual cycle, the activity of the immune system decreases as estrogen drops and progesterone rises.

This makes sense because we don’t want the immune system to reject a fertilized embryo, which is partly foreign tissue.

Progesterone is produced at ovulation to allow the fertilized egg to attach to the wall of the uterus and to have a functioning pregnancy. The activity of the immune system drops to allow a fertilized egg – which is partly a foreign tissue – to attach to the lining of the uterus and start growing as an embryo. Therefore, women are more susceptible to viral infections before menstruation than after.

People with chronic viral conditions often have high copper levels, which can be counteracted (lowered) by supplementing with certain antioxidants and vitamins. If you have a copper IUD inserted as a contraceptive, you should check your copper levels regularly. One woman was diagnosed with false MS, and for seven years was often out of sorts, mentally fragile and prone to crying. It turned out that her copper level was too high, and when it was adjusted, all discomfort disappeared immediately.

Higher risk of autoimmunity

The downside of the strong female immune system is that women are three times more likely to develop autoimmune diseases than men, according to a major study in North America. As many as nine out of ten SLE (systemic lupus erythematosus) sufferers are women (of childbearing age). So that’s the flip side of having a stronger immune system, and I think that’s why it’s all the more important for us women to look at both our diet and our nutritional status.

Autoimmune diseases have long been thought to follow infectious diseases like a shadow, but there are also links to lectins (glycoproteins) in gluten, cow’s milk and beans. Lectins are well known to irritate the immune system and cause cells to clump together. I did my thesis at Lund University in 1983 on the ability of red kidney bean lectin to activate and agglutinate (clump together) the white blood cells of the immune system.

Autoimmune diseases are almost always found among those with a slow metabolism, which is more common in women than in men.

Metabolism matters

A slow metabolism means that they have increased thymus (thymus gland) activity and reduced adrenal gland activity, making them more susceptible to viral infections. The thymus is a small butterfly-shaped organ on top of the heart, known as the ‘heart’ of the immune system, and is responsible for T-cell maturation, among other things.

The appearance of the thymus (right) and its position in the body, nestled between the lungs and on top of the heart.

Signs of an under-functioning thymus are frequent colds and flu, chronic and long-lasting infections, frequent allergic reactions, swollen glands, depression, extreme sweating and swelling of the throat.

Those with a slow metabolism are more likely to get viral infections, while those with a fast metabolism (high energy or metabolic rate) are more likely to get bacterial infections.

From this perspective, it is very important to help those who have metabolic diseases, and thus depressed and slow metabolism (metabolism) to get this in order with first dietary changes and supplements. When you are a little more alert, you can go for a walk and then exercise, because movement is important for a good metabolism. Sauna baths and cold showers will also speed it up, but balance it with diet first. Cutting out all fast carbohydrates including fruit and alcohol is important!

Women – be proud of your strong immune system!

So the bottom line is that nature has ensured that fertile women have a strong immune system to ensure the survival of the family. Perhaps it is precisely the same parameters that govern men’s choice of women – that they should preferably have a youthful and healthy appearance in order to pass on healthy genes. It’s a basic instinct, because the survival of the family depends on women being strong and healthy.

*Androgens are the male sex hormones, steroid hormones that give the male sex characteristics and especially testosterone.

But… women’s health is a lower priority

Addendum: Although the impact of hormones on the immune system has been known for more than a century, the area remains unexplored because women’s health has long been a lower priority.

Did you know that the male immune system has been the norm in research and animal experiments have been carried out mainly on males.

Research and reports, including from the National Board of Health and Welfare, the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions (SALAR) and the National Institute of Public Health, show that the healthcare system has major shortcomings in meeting and treating care recipients on equal terms.

In general, more expensive medicines are prescribed to men and cheaper ones to women, and women’s symptoms and diseases have not been taken as seriously.

That’s why Alexandra Charles founded the $1.6 million club in 1998, after hearing two professors talk about how male-dominated research is and how women are discriminated against in healthcare.
