
Water fasting beneficial for men
New research shows that water fasting promotes healthy functioning of the urogenital system in men (35-60 years). They studied changes in the lower urinary tract efficiency, the concentration of sex hormones and the symptoms of prostate diseases in 14 healthy men with previous experience of fasting. The conclusion is that eight-day water fasting had a strong positive influence on the hormones regulating reproduction and fertility, especially in the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, with concomitant decreases in a range of parameters (such as prostate and testicular volume) resulting in improved lower urinary tract functions. Periodic water fasting also has a positive effect on erection problems. This is very promising!
Taking shorter or longer food breaks – fasting – is the new star in the health sky. Weekly intermittent fasting with the 5:2 method and 18:6 (14-18 hours of food breaks per day) have become very popular. Doctor Michael Mosley’s books on are highly appreciated.
An important strategy to improve people’s health status is various calorie-restricted diets, and intermittent water fasting is the most widely used today. Water fasting, also known as therapeutic fasting, is gaining in popularity as it provides profound healing and renewal thanks to autophagy, which is the breakdown of junk proteins and old cells including cancer cells. In addition, there is the production of growth hormones and the activation of stem cells, so total renewal and rebuilding can take place. The body is ingenious; designed for optimal repair, healing and function.
Longer water fasting has documented positive effects in hypertension, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia and chronic pain. In general, the beneficial effects of consuming only mineral water (water fasting) on changes in blood pressure, plasma lipid profile and lowered insulin levels in the blood after meals. All of this has been documented to prevent undesirable weight gain (for references to these two paragraphs see the link to the research study at the bottom).
Periodic water fasting increases the production of testosterone, which contributes to healthy erectile function.
Background to the study
The efficiency of men’s urinary excretion is affected by a number of lower urinary tract symptoms (called LUTS). This pathology affects 15-60% of men over 40. It may be related to one or more of the following diseases: benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostate cancer, bladder muscle weakness and/or instability, acute or chronic prostatitis, urinary tract infection, urethral stricture, stones blocking the urinary tract or neurological diseases. Benign prostatic hyperplasia is present in the majority, and a combination of all of these is present in 90% of men over 80 years of age. It is therefore of great importance to have simple, preventive methods to address this.
The study involved 14 healthy men (50 ± 10 years) who were used to fasting before enrolling in this study. The researchers measured a range of test parameters before and after 8 days of water-only fasting, during which the subjects drank as much mineralized water as they needed, i.e. containing minerals needed by the body. The following measurements of the bodily and blood concentration were made:
- total prostate specific antigen (PSA-T)
- free prostate specific antigen ( PSA-F)
- follicle stimulating hormone (FSH)
- luteotropic hormone (LH)
- prolactin (Pr)
- total testosterone (T-T)
- free testosterone (T-F)
- dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA)
- sex hormone globulin binding (SHGB)
- total cholesterol (Ch-T)
- p-hydroxybutyrate (p-HB).
- In addition, prostate volume (PV), volume of each testicle (TV), total volume of both testicles (TTV), maximum urine flow rate (Qmax) and International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) values were determined.
Outcome
After 8 days of water, urine flow and prostate values improved, while prostate volume and testicular volume decreased significantly. The latter indicates reduced inflammation, and is very positive. Blood levels of PSA-T, FSH, P, T-T, T-F and DHEA decreased, but SHGB concentration increased significantly. These results suggest that 8 days of water-only fasting improves lower urinary tract function without adverse health effects. Good for men to know, says Dr. Sanna.

– My comment: excellent results and important study. But I recommend doing my VASS fast 1.5-3 days repeatedly instead! Easier to get in and work with an active daily life. Even one day of water fasting a week, periodic fasting every day and dietary changes will go a long way.
The men lost an average of 5.5 kg and reduced their BMI from 25 to 23.3 after 8 days of water fasting.
Does water fasting help with erection problems?
Yes, high probability with repeated water fasting (intermittent fasting). This is based on the proven experience of many, but also on a purely biochemical-hormonal basis. This is because intermittent fasting reduces the release of insulin triggered by carbohydrate-rich foods. When insulin is released, the food is first converted into energy storage as glycogen in the liver, and then the excess becomes fat storage. As diets today are high in carbohydrates, the high insulin release leads to obesity, then insulin resistance and then type 2 diabetes.
Diabetes causes vascular inflammation and damage to the endothelial cells in the vessel walls responsible for the release of nitric oxide, which in turn plays a major role in the dilation of blood vessels. This process is extremely important for penile erection and when nitric oxide is not released due to vascular damage, diabetes and inflammation, it leads to erectile dysfunction. Intermittent fasting helps to reverse the inflammatory process that creates a host of problems in the body, erectile dysfunction being just one.
Intermittent fasting increases the male hormone testosterone. Testosterone is the main male hormone, and it is crucial to a man’s ability to get and maintain an erection as well as consummate sexual intercourse. Studies have shown that intermittent fasting increases the production of testosterone, which in turn helps healthy erectile function.
When men become overweight, they develop leptin resistance and this is directly linked to low testosterone. Leptin is a hormone released by adipose tissue and is involved in temperature regulation and appetite suppression. Other hormones that are indirectly involved in erectile function and are increased by intermittent fasting are adrenaline and growth hormone.
Conclusion: the best thing is to do periodic water fasting – shorter or longer – and preferably remove the sugar and eat a low-carb diet (keto diet or high proportion of carnivores).
