Something new is born – fasting and silence
A personal reflection – here is the first section of my final Epilogue (afterword) in Sannas Fastebok.
Have you considered that silence is a scarce commodity? I’m sitting in a café writing this and the background music is pounding, just like it does almost everywhere these days. This constant carpet of sound, often with synthetic music… why? Is silence dangerous? Sound breaks – that calm the external impressions. So that you feel and hear more internally…
It’s as if our society is designed for constant activity and for all the senses to be engaged to the maximum – lots of visual impressions, not least on all screens. The flickering of lights, the noise of sound and constant snacking and eating… Visual, audio and oral stimulation all the time. Is this what we want? Stop and no – we need a break from a lot now.
Fasting is silence. Fasting, done properly, brings a beautiful silence to the body. It stills everything, and paves the way for inner harmony. It is an amazing experience. Challenging at times because we have become accustomed to eating often and a lot, as if food were the security blanket of our lives. Sure, meals are positive, socially enjoyable and create community – but eating has become so much more today. Like a drug where all emotions can be suppressed or released with food and drink. The food supply is confusingly large too, so much to choose from all the time – is that what we want?
I think that after a longer period of accelerating intensity, something completely different will come.
Yang dominance transitions to more yin. The addiction society reaches its saturation point, because it does not lead to more satisfaction but, on the contrary, it brings more emptiness and alienation – isolation. People will switch off and shut down more and more. Be more careful with digital and seek more human contact, face to face – heart to heart. Going on Lenten retreats with yoga and fasting walks. Healing in groups, working towards the same goal. Interest in, for example, Mindfulness and
Many people judge themselves where they are because they feel they are struggling – and they think it should be different.
More and more people are choosing to spend more time nurturing and strengthening their health. Turning to frugal simplicity – because the soul likes it. Water fasting offers just that, simplicity and peace – and the best healing on many levels. When we quiet the external and still the buzz of voices, as during a meditation, we connect with something completely different. Something new can be born.
Life is a journey, constantly discovering and learning new things. We are here to experience and learn, about life and ourselves. – Sanna Ehdin
